Favre sharp in “meaningful” preseason game, media circus at bay (for now)

Brett Favre gave a satisfying performance, going 13-18 for 142 yards and a score, as The Vikings beat the Texans 17-10 to improve to 3-0 this preseason. Although it is common knowledge that the

Brett Favre avoided (another) outrage with a solid performance Monday
preseason is about as meaningful as a Charlie Batch completion, many were interested to see if Favre would struggle on only his 13th day with the Vikes.
Favre’s iffy performance last week against the Chiefs gave way to yet another leg of the media circus that seems to have leeched onto the three time MVP, and ‘Something About Mary’ star, for the past few years now. The term “schism” (which Vikings DT Jared Allen hilariously believed to be an STD) was introduced to many media outlets as reports began to break of a divided Vikings locker room that was not fully sold on Brett Favre as the starting quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings.
Fast forward to Monday night, where Brett Favre and the Vikings were in the national media spotlight amidst the “schism” controversy, and it (almost) felt like Brett Favre needed to deliver a performance of epic proportions in order to calm the storm of the schism scandal. If the emerging “schism” controversy was not enough of a storyline, Favre was to to perform on a night after a weekend that saw Aaron Rodgers (his replacement in Green Bay who he will forever be linked to) torch The Cardinals for 258 yards and three touchdowns, and Jay Cutler (his fellow questionable-big-name-NFC North-acquisition) play a near-flawless half against The Denver Broncos where he lead the Chicago Bears on a 98 yard touchdown drive at one point.
Fortunately for The Vikings Favre did enough, and received enough jocking from the esteemed Monday Night Football Announcers after a few mishaps, to ”solidify” his starting role in the court of public opinion. After Favre failed to connect with an open Percy Harvin, The Vikings first round pick at Wide Receiver, on a play that would have resulted in a Vikings touchdown, the play was quickly dismissed as a rookie mistake (which in all fairness it was). Favre was eventually able to find a rhythm and the highlight of his night came on a 28 yard touchdown pass to RB Chester Taylor (again, in all fairness, Taylor did most of the work on that one). All in all, Favre’s performance, while shaky in some instances, was enough to halt the “VIKINGS TO BENCH FAVRE” hyperbole that would have been printed on Tuesday morning newspapers.
