NFL SpreadSHREDDER: Week 3

The SpreadSHREDDER went 1-3 last week.  A minor setback, but we plan to make up for it this week.

Tennessee (+2.5) over New York Jets

Nobody celebrates non-championship wins like The New York Jets. In  backing up the trash talk that they laid down on The Pats all last week (and they haven’t shut up since), the Jets won the first of two annual Superbowl games against The Patriots and are riding the ensuing excessive praise from The New York Media.

Don't smile too much, Mark, The SpreadSHREDDER likes The Titans this week.

The Tennessee Titans have had two losses influenced by fluke turnovers and missed field goals, and we like them to storm into The Meadowlands and bring Jets nation back to reality.  Statistically, The Jets have the best defense in the NFL.  Realistically, that defense played a Houston team who was forced to throw all game after falling behind quickly, thus making them more predictable, and a New England Team who’s quarterback (Tom Brady) is still out of sync with his offense after spending the previous year on the IR.

New England struggled against the Jets’ aggressive blitzing scheme, that has since received so much praise, and now has them confused for the best D in the league.  However along with New England’s aforementioned issues on offense, they did not have Wes Welker who is not only their best receiver but also is brilliant in picking up the blitz.  Expect RB’s Lendale White and Chris Johnson to hurt The Jets both offensively and in picking up the blitz.  Mike Heimerdinger, Tennessee’s offensive coordinator, spent three years coaching against that ‘vaunted’ Jets defense in practices as offensive coordinator for the New York Jets.   The Titans bring an experienced head coach and staff, in a must-win position, to New York to play a first year head coach and rookie quarterback in Rex Ryan and Mark Sanchez, respectively.  Expect a desperate Tennessee Titans team to enter the win column after utilizing an effective running game and making Mark Sanchez look like the rookie that he really is.  Tennessee 21, New York Jets 14

Denver (+1.5) over Oakland

It should come as a surprise to absolutely no one that The Denver Broncos, who lost 2 out of 3 fumbles last season, are +4 in the turnover differential category this season (tied for 2nd highest in the league).  The Oakland Raiders have been playing competitive football early in the season despite their quarterback, Jamarcus Russel.  Despite a stellar running game, Oakland only averages 15 first downs a game.  Going against a defense that has only allowed 140 yards rushing in two games, expect The Raider’s running game to struggle.  The Raider’s struggles in the trenches will force their ineffective quarterback to attempt to produce offensively, and against a veteran defense, he will  either turn the ball over or fail to move the chains.  Denver 20, Oakland 13

Philadelphia (-8.5) over Kansas City

Donovan McNabb’s injury could serve as a blessing in disguise as it will be a nightmare for The Kansas City coaching staff, who is in its first year and still trying to get all its ducks in a row, to gameplan for the quarterback position that could be played by one of four Eagles QB’s.  Expect Kevin Kolb, who threw for almost 400 yards against The Saints last week, to get the start and have no problems moving an Eagles offense that has averaged 20 first downs and 30 points per game.  A turnover-influenced blowout loss last week against the Saints has created exceptional value for Philadelphia, who will be playing at home and looking to go into their bye week with a win. Philadelphia 28, Kansas City 13
