With Tiger Woods locked away in a fortress of solitude waiting for Brett Favre to re-unretire so that the media has a fresh new batch of catnip, we’ve decided that now would be a great time to bring back The Quoterack.  This special edition of The Quoterack will serve as a timeline of Tiger’s image going all ‘Dallas Cowboys in December’ through the art of the public statement.

“As you all know, I had a single-car accident earlier this week, and sustained some injuries. I have some cuts, bruising and right now I’m pretty sore.

This situation is my fault, and it’s obviously embarrassing to my family and me. I’m human and I’m not perfect. I will certainly make sure this doesn’t happen again.

This is a private matter and I want to keep it that way. Although I understand there is curiosity, the many false, unfounded and malicious rumors that are currently circulating about my family and me are irresponsible.

The only person responsible for the accident is me. My wife, Elin, acted courageously when she saw I was hurt and in trouble. She was the first person to help me. Any other assertion is absolutely false.

This incident has been stressful and very difficult for Elin, our family and me. I appreciate all the concern and well wishes that we have received. But, I would also ask for some understanding that my family and I deserve some privacy no matter how intrusive some people can be.”

“[Woods' injuries were not] consistent with a car wreck and inconsistent with him being beat up…The scratches on his face were consistent with someone who maybe was in a minor car accident and hit his head on the windshield. … None of his injuries looked like he was beat up by his wife.”

“I have let my family down and I regret those transgressions with all of my heart. I have not been true to my values and the behavior my family deserves. I am not without faults and I am far short of perfect. I am dealing with my behavior and personal failings behind closed doors with my family. Those feelings should be shared by us alone.”

“I’m kind of filled with sorrow for Elin since me and my wife are at fault for hooking her up with him, and we probably thought he was a better guy than he is”

“I would probably have to apologize to her and hope she uses a driver next time instead of a three-iron.”

“I am deeply aware of the disappointment and hurt that my infidelity has caused to so many people, most of all my wife and children.  I want to say again to everyone that I am profoundly sorry and that I ask forgiveness. It may not be possible to repair the damage I’ve done, but I want to do my best to try.”

Nike CEO Phil Knight on decision to stick with Tiger Woods [Fanhouse.com]

“I think he has been really great. When his career is over, you’ll look back on these indiscretions as a minor blip, but the media is making a big deal out of it right now.”

“One of the things we always try to do when we have a big endorsement is check out the character and the pattern of the individual, but you’re not going to get it right all the time, and if you’re going to be in the business you have to recognize that.”
