Leading up to the Superbowl, The Big Nasty Athletic Dept. will weigh in on what we feel are the most intriguing and bettor-friendly Superbowl Prop Bets in our ‘Superbowl Prop Bets LIVE!’ posts.

The Rating Game:  What will the TV Rating be?

Not since Hurricane Katrina has New Orleans faced such a seemingly insurmountable adversary as The Saints prepare to take on mighty media darling Peyton Manning and his Colts.  The ‘David vs. Goliath’ theme is usually huge for ratings, however this game will need to be close late for the over to cash.  ‘Davids’ usually aren’t the ratings draw that the average American who claims to ‘root for the underdog’ would like you to believe.  Superbowl Nielsen Ratings

The over/under for this particular bet is is 42.9.  In the past ten years, The Superbowl rating has gone over 43.0 in the Nielsen ratings just twice, and only once when a Superbowl featured a team making its Superbowl Debut (Tennessee Titans), an ominous sign for The New Orleans Saints who are set to play in their first Superbowl come Sunday.

The ratings system is far too complicated to explain for purposes of betting, so we’ve decided to simplify this process by using a method that isn’t even close to how the Nielsen ratings really work in order to better explain to you where we’re coming from with this one.

Peyton Manning (+40)

+ Drew Brees (+10)

+Offense (+30)

-Saints Wide Receiver Corps (-10)

-Colts Wide Receiver Corps (-10)

-Coaches not named Rex Ryan (-10)

+Reggie Bush (+5)

-The City of New Orleans Fatigue (-10)

-Peyton Manning Fatigue (-4)

GRAND TOTAL:  41

UNDER 42.9 Nielsen Rating (+105)
