Big Nasty’s WWE NXT Power Rankings
__________________________________________________________________________1. Wade Barrett- Case and point: This guy is going to be a star. He’s an athletic big man with charisma and that formula spells straight cash for The WWE. Barret was obviously hand-picked to be Vince McMahon’s personal indy-killer as he made quite quick work out of Daniel Bryan. Barret is now one of the few reasons that I will keep watching WWE NXT as WWE epic failed in delivering the ‘innovative’ concept that was original promised.
2. Justin Gabriel- Gabriel earned his way into my power rankings mostly based on potential as there were a few bright spots in his otherwise standard tag team match with Matt Hardy against William Regal and the loquacious Skip Sheffield. We told you over the weekend that we thought this kid was going to be a star and we weren’t playing. So far, so good.
3. David Otunga- Otunga’s got something. He took his lumps in a match against Darren Young that was one of the longer matches of the night which is a far cry from the squash match they had last week (in fact this time they kind of dragged on). Otunga seems to have captured lightning in a bottle with this character, and once he becomes capable in the ring Batista may be forced to pass his ‘celebrity heel’ torch.
4. Daniel Bryan- Bryan’s character development is coming along, however at the expense of his top spot at the power rankings. Bryan was in yet another quick match he was on the losing end on. It seems that the powers that be are trying to re-educate the WWE audience that Daniel Bryan indeed is a rookie and has a long way to go before he is a viable star.
5. Skip Sheffield- As expected, Skip Sheffield’s character-driven gimmick seems to be on pace to join Crash Holly, Jamie Noble, and perhaps Santino Marella as nice comedy acts that seem to carve out a spot on the WWE roster for years to come. There’s no doubt that Sheffield could be a star in The WWE, however not like how Dwayne Johnson was a star and more like how Pauly Shore became a ‘star’.
6. Darren Young- Despite being in one of the longest matches of the night, Darren Young still didn’t show me much. Young needs to interact more with CM Punk and company for that character to really take off because that series of power movies and hammerlocks that was supposed to be a wrestling match just fell flat for me.
7. Heath Slater- WWE NXT is a reality show because they film vignettes in a gym? Slater didn’t do much in this episode but it seems he will be a focal point of next week’s show after his show-ending confrontation with Carlito.
Michael Tarver was not showcased this past week (because as Vince McMahon would put it: “THIS ISN’T MMA!!! THIS IS THE WWE!! NOT BOXING EITHER!!! YOU WANNA KNOCK PEOPLE OUT?? YOU WANNA KNOCK PEOPLE OUT, PAL?!!! WHY DON’T YOU TRY KNOCKING ME OUT AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS!!! WHAT DO YOU THINK TIHS IS?!! HUH? YOU THINK THIS IS BRAWL FOR ALL?!! YOU WANNA FIGHT BUTTERBEAN AT WRESTLEMANIA, PAL?!!! DO YA?!! YOU WANNA GET IN THERE WITH BART GUNN??! WELL THAT’S TOO DAMN BAD!! THIS IS THE WWE, DAMN IT!!! NOW PAY YOUR DUES!) and is not eligible to be in the power rankings.
