WRESTLEMANIUM: John Cena Knows How to Make an Entrance
__________________________________________________________________________All March long, we will be counting down to Wrestlemania 26 with our WRESTLEMANIUM segments. WRESTLEMANIUM will be taking a look at multiple different aspects of the WWE’s biggest event of the year as we look at the best wrestlers, memorable moments, memorable Wrestlemanias, and other Wrestlemania-related topics all leading up to The March 28th spectacular that WE will be attending as part of the next leg of our Big Nasty World Tour.
John Cena’s Wrestlemania Entrances
So I was browsing Youtube, which has become the unofficial American pastime (literally, it was 2AM before I knew what hit me!), and I realized that I was in full-blown Wrestlemania mode. For hours on end, I inhaled vintage clips from Wrestlemanias past as I prepared for what should be a remarkable Wrestlemania 26 in Glendale, Arizona.
Along with the realization of the fact that I indeed do have ‘Mania fever, you know what else I realized? I realized “Holy shit John Cena knows how to make an entrance.”
Now, many people in my brand of covering pro wrestling (you know? Bloggers, dirt sheet guys, insiders, etc.), hate John Cena with a passion. They think he’s too bland. They don’t want him shoved down their throats. He’s too ‘family-friendly’ and watered down. He is what MC Hammer was to hardcore hip-hop fans who felt the Hammer was out to ruin hip-hop all while lining his pockets with big money before it would all be said and done (how wrong did that school of thought turn out to be and on how many levels?)
I guess that makes me somewhat of a rare breed. I like John Cena. There is nobody in the pro wrestling business more deserving of being a top guy than Cena, and it aint even close. Many are down on his in-ring work, however you cannot deny that when it comes to a big match situation John Cena almost always delivers. And when it comes to the biggest stage the pro wrestling business has to offer, John Cena knows how to make an entrance!
What I like about Cena’s entrances are that they aren’t just big entrances done for the sake of being big entrances. In year’s past, they have always been unique to the venue that Wrestlemania takes place in, capturing the entire spirit of a city before the bell even rings. Take Wrestlemania 22 for instance, which took place in Chicago. After an entourage of WWE developmental superstars, dressed like gangsters from the depression era (with one of them even being Chicago’s own CM Punk), Cena showed up atop the Wrestlemania ramp adorned in a trench coat, a hat, and a Gatling gun that he fired into the air. Epic. This entrance earns a 8.0/10.
The next year, at Wrestlemania 23, John Cena had another thrilling entrance that was almost as good as his entrance from the previous year. Cena, and whoever he hired as CEO of his Bells and Whistles Dept., drew up and entrance that would have made his NASCAR buddy Carl Edwards hard. Cena(‘s stunt driver) raced around the city of Detroit in a slick 2008 Ford Mustang that crashed through a Wrestlemania 23 glass before Cena was revealed as the driver. This entrance earns a 7.5/10.
Wrestlemania 24 at The Orange Bowl was even more impressive! You didn’t have to watch The U in order to know that much of Florida loves its Hurricanes. And In a venue that was made famous by The Miami Hurricanes tumultuous string of dominance in the 1980′s, John Cena had the Miami University band members play him out. This entrance earns an 8.0/10.
Last year, at Wrestlemania 25, John Cena did his best impression of Eminem as he had an army of John Cena clones stand in two single-file lines before he finally took the stage. 6.5/10.
Many cynics will point to the above-mentioned clips as exhibits of why John Cena is a shameless suck up willing to do anything to get himself over with the fans. I won’t put up too much of an argument against that claim, however I will argue that this is one of facets about John Cena that has made him so great. John Cena has, and always will be, willing to do anything to give WWE fans the best possible show that they could ever imagine witnessing. That’s why he’s on top, that’s why he’ll stay on top, and for that, Cena, we applaud you. I’m just looking forward to what he’s going to do this year in Arizona…
Possible John Cena Entrances at Wrestlemania 26
- John Cena emerges from a replica of a Grand Canyon.
- John Cena comes to the ring accompanied by Wayne Gretzky.
- The indoor roof opens and John Cena is seen standing atop the sun. In a feat of strength once thought to be impossible, Cena hits the Attitude Adjustment on the sun as the lights go out and everybody dies. Definitely didn’t think that through.
- The Phoenix Suns mascot (The Gorilla) jumps through a hoop of fire and slam dunks a basketball. John Cena follows suit and accidentally lights himself on fire a la The Undertaker. Too soon?
