UFC 112: Don’t call it a Preview Review

Due to the time difference between Abu Dhabi and The United States, the UFC 112 card has already aired, so please avert your eyes if you plan to wait until later tonight to see this card as as this UFC 112 Review has *SPOILERS*.

Mark Munoz over Kendall Grove. Kendall Grove has been the model of inconsistency in The UFC, and if you ask me, and if it weren’t for this fight earning fight of the night honors, I would tend to believe that he may be on his way out.  Meanwhile, Mark Munoz has quietly put together a string of victories and is ready for the upper echelon fighters in his division.  I think Rich Franklin is in his crosshairs.

Rafael Dos Anjos over Terry Etim. Dos Anjos is going to have to start digging deep into his Jui-Jitsu bag o’ tricks with more submission victories like the one at ’112′ if he wants to get on anybody’s radar anytime soon.  This will be quite the setback for Terry Etim who was on fire before running into a Brazillian Buzzsaw.

Matt Hughes over Renzo Gracie. So goes the story of the UFC outsider coming into the octagon and getting his world rocked, Renzo Gracie hung in there but the more legendary Matt Hughes apparently still has something in that tank of his.  It will be interesting to see what the UFC does with both of these fighters going forward if anything.

Frankie Edgar over B.J. Penn. The ‘Penn to 170 lbs.’ talk has been put on hold as Frankie Edgar proved that B.J. Penn is not the pound for pound best fighter as it stands.  I can’t say I’m too surprised by this outcome, although I did have B.J., as Edgar has proved to have been extremely difficult to figure out throughout his career.  A little bird tells me that Edgar/Penn II can’t be too far away.

Anderson Silva over Demian Maia. I haven’t seen this fight yet, but to the surprise of nobody in The Big Nasty Athletic Dept., this fight went to a decision and was probably the 5 round dancefest that we thought it would be.  It is getting to the point where Silva may risk his star power and perceived dominance if The UFC keeps giving him fights against fellow Jui-Jitsu guys who are afraid to really mix it up with Anderson.  I think it may be time to see that Silva/St. Pierre fight that the gorilla in the room has been in Dana’s ear about.
