WWE NXT: Season Two Scouting Reports

WWE NXT: Season 2, has drawn some significant heat on itself despite not even airing its first episode.  Two of the competitors are of the generational variety, which is becoming ubiquitous in the WWE, yet instead of taking their famous fathers’ last names they have been reduced to walking alliterations.

Meanwhile, Kaval, the resident Internet pinata, has been paired with the first female pros in WWE NXT history: Laycool.

The WWE’s job with WWE NXT is to introduce a new crop of wrestlers to its fans.  The Fed has had been much maligned by some well documented depth issues, and injecting some new blood into the machine should only help.

Since we’re down with the cause, we plan on helping the WWE in its quest to shove new stars down your mug.  It’s time to meet these wet-behind-the ears whipper snappers. (Star rating to appear at the end of individual scouting reports)

Alex Riley. Alex Riley was previously scouted.  To view his scouting report, click here.  (****)

Eli Cottonwood. Eli Cottonwood is a tall drink of water.  Booked as your typical monster heel for most of his stay in FCW, Cottonwood’s immense height and size will allow him to literally stand out from the jump.

Cottonwood is very green in the ring.  Most of his matches are kept short A. To make him look like that much of a destroyer and B.  Because his ring work is very limited.

While Cotoonwood’s ring work leaves much to be desired, his athletic prowess (he was a proficient basketball player with St. John’s University) should carry him as he continues to learn the ropes.  The WWE needs to be weary of booking this guy like your run of the mill monster heel.  Sure it’s the logical choice, but that is becoming somewhat outdated and if the guy can’t work nobody will care.  (**1/2)

Husky Harris.  The first of two generational talents on season two of WWE NXT (Duke Rotundo), Husky Harris could be the hidden gem of the show.  Harris’ pairing with Cody Rhodes makes sense, as Rhodes too is a generational talent whose father competed in the WWE.

With the overlying storyline of season two likely to be the working relationship between Laycool and Kaval, Husky’s size is matched by his unmistakable charisma.

The announcers talked up Harris’ (or ‘Big Duke’ Rotundo’s) strength during almost every one of his matches.  His ring work extenuates the fact that this is one big bull.

Harris mostly worked in a tag team with his brother Bo Rotundo, capturing the FCW tag team championships on one occasion.  But Harris was just as good in singles action (namely a match wit Heath Slater).

Harris does a good job working the athletic big man style, and should have a spot on the WWE roster regardless of how he places on WWE NXT.  Watch out, folks, this could be a fan favorite.  (***1/2)

Kaval. Kaval was previously scouted.  To review his scouting report, click here.  (*****)

Lucky Cannon. Judging from his promo this past week, on WWE TV, the name ‘Lucky’ seems to be the only compelling thing about this guy.

However upon further review, Lucky Cannon (formerly Johnny Prime) has potential to be one of the top babyfaces in the WWE.  One cannot help but recognize his in ring charisma, and despite his large 6-6, 265 frame, his high octane in ring work is similar to that of Justin Gabriel.

An impressive feud with fellow NXT rookie Alex Riley in FCW should help Johnny Prime when it comes to the psychology aspect of wrestling.

Based on his in ring work alone, which has improved in leaps and bounds,  Prime should become an immediate fan favorite in what looks to be a very impressive crop of WWE NXT rookies. (****)

Michael McGillicutty. Despite being 6’3, 235 lbs, Michael McGillicutty (son of Curt Hennig, go figure) will be one of the smaller rookies on WWE NXT.

McGillicutty is another reason why this season shouldn’t be as brutal as far as in ring work goes.  McGillicutty has spent over a year and a half in FCW developmental, and even earned the rookie of the year award from Pro Wrestling Illustrated for his work in World League Wrestling on the strength of a nine month winning streak.

McGillicutty has done a good job developing his style as there are wrinkles in his game that are reminiscent of his father, yet he adds twists to his work to make it his own.

Hopefully, McGillicutty’s ridiculous ring name is a sign that the WWE doesn’t plan on forcing a father’s gimmick on his son the way they’ve done Ted DiBiase.  (***1/2)

Percy Watson. While Kaval should be able to do just enough to keep the purists watching, Percy Watson’s flamboyant personality will drive them crazy.

Watson is obviously being slated in the Skip Sheffield comedy relief role.  Like many aspects of season one of NXT, the Skip Sheffield comedy character didn’t really take.  Hopefully, Watson’s Eddie Murphy-like humor will.

In FCW, Watson teamed with former NXT rookie Darren Young as the “South Beach Boyz”.  While the two were fun to watch and both exhibited superior athleticism for their size, they weren’t exactly the rockers.

Watson has something, yet it appears that he will be placed on the back burner and will only be called upon for comic relief with wrestling as his secondary role.  (**)

Titus O’Neil. Titus O’Neil will be one of the greener rookies this season.  Like Eli Cottonwood, an athletic background, in this case football, should assist him as he progresses as a talent.

A little bird is telling me that O’Neil may receive the Michael Tarver treatment.  It’s worth noting that Tarver took his role and ran with it.  It is yet to be determined whether or not Titus will do the same should he be booked so unfavorably. (**)
