College Football Crapshoot: Warm Up Saturday, and Boise State

College football is back and such.  In a related story, so is the crapshoot!

HERE’S WHAT I KNOW IS GOING TO HAPPEN…

I KNOW Penn State will bury Youngstown St. The Nittany Lions seem to be that rare breed of the perennially underrated Big 10 football team.  Youngstown State has made a mini tradition out of getting outclassed by a BCS school the first game out, and this will not change for this program unless Jim Tressel comes back.

I KNOW Oklahoma will bury whoever it is they’re playing (is it Utah St.?) Oklahoma is far from a ‘sexy’ pick to go to the BCS Championship game, but we like them to reload, finally beat Texas, and basically cruise to the championship game barring any major injury.  Landry Jones will be a star and the Heisman candidate that nobody seems to want to talk about at this time.  With Oklahoma’s QB concerns in check, the Sooners seem to be the only championship contending team without a major roadblock not named the Texas Longhorns standing in their way.

And just why the hell is Texas a top five team anyway?

HERE’S WHAT I THINK WILL HAPPEN…

I THINK Oregon State will beat TCU handily. Talk about underrated teams, the Pac 10 is an underrated conference and TCU may be falling into a home trap come Saturday night.  Oregon State brings an offense built to run up the score despite featuring the run with their shifty back in Quizz Rodgers.

Unlike the get rich quick teams of Boise State and TCU, you’ve got to love the ballsy schedule Oregon State plays this season.  The Beavers go on the road and out of conference against two top ten schools in two of their first three weeks.  And I’m being told Boise State could make it into the BCS Championship game with wins Wyoming, LA Tech, and Idaho on their schedule?

With some focus and a considerable amount of luck, Oregon State could very well be a dark (and I mean Wesley Snipes dark) horse as a Championship contending team.

I THINK Virginia Tech barely beats Boise State. Despite my loathsome view of Boise State, I’ve been going back and forth on this game since the end of last season.  Usually when I go back and forth on games, the side I end up choosing is dead wrong, so there is hope yet for Get Rich Quick State.

Frank Beamer is one of the better politicians in College Football as his teams are always in the national title picture despite obvious flaws.  But with Virgina Tech closer to home, with the integrity of College Football on the line, the Hokies should prevail.  Let’s just pray that they do.

HERE’S WHAT I’M PROBABLY WRONG ABOUT…

I’m probably WRONG, but LSU will survive a scare against North Carolina. This is a scary spot to open the season for LSU with so many of its SEC counterparts easing into the season by playing the San Jose States (Bama) and Miamis (OH) of the world.  Who’s willing to bet that whoever was negotiating the schedule for LSU did not bank on North Carolina even being remotely competitive at the time.

“They have a football team out there?!  That’s a basketball school!  Well, shit, let’s make it a warm up game!”

Oops.

An excited and improving football program will be all geeked up on a neutral site to play one of the nation’s best teams.  But LSU’s current streak of out of conference victories is tops in the nation, and plays a huge role in me not going all the way with the upset here.  If you’re betting, however, that stat could be reason enough to take the points.  But do your homework first.

I’m probably WRONG, but Michigan will trounce UConn. Is Michigan facing a year long must win situation?  Yes.  Is Connecticut less of a threat coming out of a weak Big East Conference on the road?  Sure.  But the fact that Rick Rod must win does not make me feel any better about picking Michigan to win nine games, and a choke job at home out of conference is nothing foreign to the Big Ten.  Should that happen, all hell would break lose.
