College Football Crapshoot: Home Stretch and Yawn
__________________________________________________________________________[Week 10 Crappy Record: 3-3]
[Cumulative Crappy Record: 39-21]
Don’t look now, but the 2010 college football regular season is almost over. That means LSU, Auburn, and Oregon must fend off pending upsets for just a few more weeks, while Boise State and TCU are running out of time to beat schools you’ve never heard of.
The ongoing investigation of Cam Newton’s eligibility is just another caveat in what is always a drama-filled home stretch of NCAA Football. At this point it seems that the FBI is favored by 30+ scholarships, and I’m taking the points.
Crappy Video of the Week: Cam Newton neither confirms nor denies reports of his demise.
Here’s what I know will happen…
I know TCU will beat SDSU outright. No emotional hangover here, and while TCU’s win over Utah was impressive, it told me a whole lot more than Utah than it did TCU. TCU may have punched itself out of BCS title contention with its most recent win, because now Utah is an afterthought much like 90 percent of the Horned Frauds’ schedule.
I’m giving San Diego State zero chance at TCU this weekend, and they may not even score a point against a defense that has played lights out against a host of skillfully bankrupt College Football programs.
I know Arkansas will beat UTEP outright. Ryan Mallett still, kinda has something to play for. The NFL draft is just five months away, and while Mallett’s Heisman run died fizzled out like championship talk for the Miami Heat, Mallett should bring his A-Game against a below average secondary for UTEP.
Arkansas will be expected to appear in a respectable bowl this season, and while this may be seen as a disappointment given the potential they showed up to the first three quarters against Alabama, the Hogs could still show progress with a possible finish just outside the top ten.
Here’s what I think will happen…
I think Northwestern (+10) will cover vs. Iowa. Northwestern is what you call a scrappy team, meaning they suck but they don’t act like it. Playing at Northwestern will be no walk through the woods (that’s more appropriate than ‘park’ for Iowa, right?) for the Hawkeyes, and coming off of a shaky win against the Hawkeyes while playing its third road game in a five week stretch, the value is definitely with Northwestern.
Iowa will be looking ahead to a big game with Ohio State in what should go a long way in deciding who will eventually rise as champion in a wide open Big 10. (Not to be confused with loaded as the Big 10 is devoid of any elite teams this season).
Northwestern plays Iowa tough and is in the game with a chance to win it late. I think.
I think Utah beats ND outright. What the hell happened to Utah? Parading around as a possible non-BCS spoiler, Utah was exposed in the equal opportunity bowl last week at home against TCU.
But with Notre Dame on the horizon (they lose to everyone), I have more faith in a psychologically rocked Utah team than I ever would in the mess that has become Notre Dame football.
This may degenerate into a hair-tugging slap fight, but Utah should still win and at least restore some of its dignity. I think.
Here’s what I’m probably wrong about…
I’m probably wrong, but Miami (+3) will cover at GA Tech. Sure they’re banged up, sure they’re on the road, but the turnover machine known as Jacory Harris will be out with a, ahem, concussion giving the inexperienced yet seemingly more efficient freshman Stephen Morris the start at quarterback.
Miami will probably go into this one with a relatively conservative gameplan, but I expect a superior defensive effort and mistake-free football to be more than enough against a bad Georgia Tech team.
I’m probably wrong, but Purdue (+13) will cover vs. Michigan. While Rick-Rod still may be in the ‘win or you’re fired’ zone, I just cannot trust the shaky Wolverines to cover a double digit spread on the road at this point.
The Wolverines have been inexperienced at quarterback since talk of Denard Robinson winning the Heisman trophy was brutally murdered in the training room, and Michigan just came off of a highly emotional home win in a shootout against Illinois.
I expect Michigan to come out flat against a game Purdue team that hung around for a while against Wisconsin. If nothing else, Purdue will have a great chance to go up and down the field against that revolting semblance of a defense that Michigan puts on the field. Everybody does.
