NBA: Chad Ford is Here to Rain on New York’s Carmelo Anthony Parade
__________________________________________________________________________The New York Knicks are the fatigued winner of an exhaustive pursuit of Carmelo Anthony, becoming the beneficiary of the umpteenth three team mega trade submitted for Anthony’s services. The celebration has been muted to some degree, given the fact that three superstar super teams are all the rage in the NBA. What’s worse is that a creeping school of thought is that the Knicks simply won’t have the cap space or tradable parts to acquire the coveted point guard that will make them a perennial contender.
Chad Ford perpetuated the damning possibility that the New York Knicks will be fumbling for the proverbial cigar lighter for years to come as he waxed poetic about the Knicks’ chances, or lack thereof, of landing a high profile third superstar a la Chris Paul or Deron Williams.
“I’m not sure this move puts [New York] much higher than a fifth or sixth seed in the East this season or the next. After next season, I don’t think the Knicks have enough cap room or assets to add another major player. I think they’re stuck.”
Not exactly the Miami Heat pre-season championship celebration befitting of a revamped, big city franchise. Ford goes on to refer to any scenario of the Knicks acquiring Deron Williams or Chris Paul a ‘dream’ – a sentiment that will give Knicks fans nightmares should it come to fruition.
Aside from Anthony’s $65 million offer sheet for a three year extension, Anthony’s wife’s desire to move to New York so she can be with her family, the Nets’ own hot pursuit of Anthony, and the Laker’s briefly entering the Carmelo Anthony sweepstakes, one of the key storylines in play amidst weeks of Carmelo Anthony trade talk was the prodding complexity of the NBA’s salary cap.
According to Chad Ford, it’s the NBA Salary Cap that should have Knick’s fans curbing their enthusiasm.
